SALADO FARMS
A division of Havano Ranch

Rick's Story: A native of Arizona. I grew up with a love of the outdoors and nature. My father was raised on a farm in Iowa and as a kid we always had the best looking yard in the neighborhood. Somehow his love of plants transferred to me. Having spent time in the military afforded me the opportunity to travel the world. Then after spending 12 years behind the wheel of a truck, I realized that I missed getting my hands dirty in the soil so I found a job that was more "normal", and that is were I met Joanne. Together we are living our dreams of doing what we love best together—we are building a better life that is more in tune with nature.

Joanne's story: My parents brought me—kicking and screaming—to Arizona from northern Virginia in 1967, at the age of 12. Rick and I grew up in Tucson a little over a mile away from each other. I was a few years behind one of his brothers in high school and a year ahead of his sister. We knew a lot of the same people and hung out at many of the same places, but never "connected" until we both started working at a ranch for at-risk youths here in Elfrida a few years ago.

We live on 30 acres just north of Elfrida that is rich in history and enjoy doing the research that turns up something new about the property just about every day. One of my goals for the ranch/farm is to provide a Forever Home to unwanted, abused, neglected, retired and/or "forgotten" horses, which I support though the sale of my art work and "horsie" items.

Along with Rick, I am always looking for ways for the farm/ranch to become self-sustaining. We won't be featured in "Mother Earth News" or "Better Homes and Gardens" this year, but look out next year! Between the worms and wonderful compost, the two 20 pound pumpkins we got this year will be 50 pounds next year!
